New road design guidance on intersections, crossings, roundabouts and interchanges

Thursday, 1 June 2023

Austroads has updated its Guide to Road Design part 4 series and the Design Vehicles and Turning Path Templates Guide providing contemporary intersection design guidance based on best-practice evidence to improve road safety.

Michael Nieuwesteeg, Austroads’ Road Safety and Design Program Manager, says the road transport industry is ever evolving and guidelines for practitioners must be maintained to include the latest research and best practices from across Australia and internationally.

A literature review of 14 Austroads research reports and key relevant jurisdictional supplements formed the basis of the updates with captured learning and experiences from road authorities and industry sharing insights into the application of the Guide to Road Design parts 4, 4A, 4B and 4C.

“We undertook this comprehensive update to ensure the most current body of knowledge is transferred into the Guide for implementation,” said Michael. “We consolidated new approaches to intersection and crossing design developed by jurisdictions and provided clear instruction to road practitioners on how Safe System principles are to be applied in the road design context.”

The updates focused on pedestrian crossings over raised platforms, railway crossing design, rural channelised intersection design, acceleration lane lengths for heavy vehicles to accelerate from rest to a specified speed, compact roundabouts, radial design of roundabouts, bicycle lanes at roundabouts and geometry of interchange ramps.

Edition 4.0 of the Design Vehicles and Turning Path Templates Guide has been restructured with additional guidance included on design vehicles versus checking vehicles, performance-based standards, clearances between swept paths, software parameters and a new design vehicle for a passenger vehicle towing a trailer.
