As the shortage of quality quarried materials and natural gravels for road construction and maintenance is increasing, there is an urgent need to consider more effective ways to manage the available natural resources and their consumption for longer-term asset planning.

Austroads’ report Sustainable Roads Through Fit-for-purpose Use of Available Materials provides step-by-step guidance to help road agencies assess available materials and select those that are directly suited to the chosen design application therefore optimising budget resources while continuing to meet a required quality level.

To extend practitioners’ understanding of what influences material performance and how to balance it with budget optimisation and level‑of‑service requirements, Austroads will run a series of webinars focused on the material assessment and life-cycle costing frameworks and their application to sealed and unsealed roads.

There will be three sessions with the first one covering the development of the materials assessment framework in detail and how it can be used to undertake resource assessment.

Special guest speaker Phil Hunt from Road Engineering Services will provide local insight on the application of the material assessment methodology, followed by a demonstration of worked examples through several case studies.

There will also be question and answer opportunities throughout the session.

Presented by Zia Rice and Phil Hunt.

Zia Rice has worked at ARRB for just over four years and leads the Perth Pavement team. Zia has over five years previous experience as a Geotechnical Consultant where she gained extensive field experience in natural materials and engineering geology.

Zia is currently working on a variety of projects including the recent development of a new Materials Best Practice Guide which sits within a suite of new guides aimed at addressing Local Government needs. She also undertakes a variety of research projects under the Western Australian Road Research and Innovation Program (WARRIP) in conjunction with Main Roads WA.

Phil Hunt’s baseline skills come from nearly three decades of experience in the road design and construction industry. He has extensive experience in the concept, planning, design, construction, maintenance and asset management of roads and bridges. Phil’s skills in project management, contract management, along with his technical and analytical approach to issues can be applied to any field for a successful outcome. Phil often sees the big-picture issues, problems and resolutions where others fail to do so.

There is no charge but registration for the webinar is essential.
