The new AS 5100.5 Concrete has been heavily revised since its last issue in 2004.

Part 5 now addresses shear and torsion of flexural members in a completely new way utilising the modified compression field theory. Steel fibre reinforced concrete has been introduced, with the Design Standard understood to be the first bridge code in the world to address the design and construction aspects of this material.

This paper will present a detailed explanation of the background to these two new developments, as well and providing an overview of other significant changes including; new material requirements for both concrete and reinforcement, design for elevated temperatures from hydrocarbon fires, design for durability and strut-and-tie modelling.
