Webinar: Road Deterioration Model Update

Road deterioration (RD) models help in predicting future road condition and assessing maintenance needs. Austroads’ recent project updated the current Austroads RD models using the additional long-term pavement performance (LTPP) and long-term pavement performance maintenance (LTPPM) data as well as other available data, such as the traffic speed deflectometer (TSD) datasets, to improve these models’ explanatory power to support wider loading and the climate conditions observed in Australia. The updated and improved RD models can predict the impact of the wider loading and climate conditions observed in Australia.

The project produced four Austroads publications covering the updated RD models for cracking, strength (deflection), rutting and roughness. The project was managed in conjunction with the technical support of a Project Working Group sourced from industry and the road agencies. In addition, expert advice was sought from acknowledged experts in industry and academia.

Each of the reports documented a literature review of the state-of-the-art in deterioration modelling, a review of the available datasets for each of the RD models, the approach used to update each of the RD models and the validation of the rutting and roughness RD models.

This webinar will present an overview of the methodology used to achieve the above objectives and the outcomes of the project.

  • the basis for using the LTPP and LTPPM datasets for updating the RD models, including use of the TSD automatic crack detection (ACD) device data specifically for the update of the RD model for cracking
  • the methodology adopted for updating the RD models
  • validation of the rutting and roughness RD models.

The webinar will be presented by Dr Tim Martin, Ranita Sen and Tyrone Toole. There will be a live Q&A with the presenters to ask questions about this project.

Dr Tim Martin is a National Discipline Leader Performance Modelling, Road Asset Performance at the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) with over 40 years of professional experience. Tim designed this observational study with long-term pavement performance (LTPP) sites and long-term pavement maintenance (LTPPM) sites, including related experimental studies with accelerated load testing. This data was used in 2008 in the development of road deterioration and works effects models for arterial roads. These models are used in pavement management systems (PMS) and the estimation of marginal road wear costs and were updated by this project.

Ranita Sen, Senior Technology Leader, Road Asset Performance at ARRB. Ranita works in the development of pavement management systems (programmed maintenance plan) for various clients using tools such as the dTIMS pavement management system, FAMLIT for the marginal cost of road wear and Microsoft office packages. Ranita’s work has investigated the impact of changes in fleet composition and higher axle mass limits on pavement profile characteristics for selected highways in Victoria, Australia.

Tyrone Toole, Chief Technology Leader, Road Asset Performance at ARRB. Tyrone has over 40 years’ experience in a wide range of highway engineering and management projects, and in institutional development and training in over 20 countries. He specialises in the management and delivery of multi-disciplinary projects, and has specific experience in institutional development and reform, and in research and the provision of advice in the management and design of low and high-volume roads in developed, developing and emerging countries. Tyrone has been with ARRB for over 20 years following over 20 years with TRL’s Overseas Unit and continues to contribute as a leading international expert on the development of road asset management guidelines and implementing road planning and management systems and procedures in numerous countries.
