This study compares and examines the performance of micro-modelling (SIDRA) and microsimulation (AIMSUN, VISSIM and Q-PARAMICS) in modelling of single signalised intersections. The aim is to contribute to the Austroads NS1371 guidelines by improving the guidance on selecting the appropriate modelling technique for a single signalised intersection study.

Two study sites were used to compare queue length, delay and environmental indicators between micro-modelling and microsimulation. Microsimulation models examined included fixed-time, vehicle-actuated and SCATSIM models. Consistency between model outputs was examined. Queue length was compared with field measurements to check accuracy.

The case study results were utilised to formulate guidance on the selection of the appropriate technique for modelling single signalised intersections. The need for an updated guideline on modelling of environmental impacts of network operation was also highlighted.
