This test method is used to measure the ability of a concrete with a maximum coarse aggregate size of 20 mm or less to retain its water under pressure.

This test determines the amount of water de-filtered when concrete is subjected to a certain applied pressure. The test method was further developed from the filtration test procedure for bentonite and is similar to the filtration test in accordance with the Austrian Guide for soft concrete.

The filtration test can be used for mix design development and approval and is not generally used for production testing. Testing usually starts immediately after mixing of concrete. The test results describe the filtration loss and the filter cake thickness.

The test method can also be downloaded as a Word document.
