Alkali aggregate reaction (AAR), often referred to as concrete cancer, is a chemical reaction that occurs when the alkalis in cement come into contact with certain types of aggregate, triggering the expansion of aggregate which can lead to loss of strength and spalling. This chemical process can prompt the premature deterioration of concrete structures, causing serious structural damage and costly repairs.
