The recent report Review of the School Bus Safety Action Plan (AP-R207, 2002) detailed the implementation of a range of school bus safety measures by jurisdictions and also provided a methodology for refining and prioritising measures contained in the National School Bus Safety Action Plan. This report examines the implications of implementing a set of five vehicle-based countermeasures outlined in AP-R207 including lap-sash set belts, higher seat backs, one child to each single seat, prohibiting standing passengers, and improving bus rollover strength. The report outlines work undertaken to: . investigate the costs and associated implications of implementing each of the five vehicle-based countermeasures or actions . determine the economic value of each countermeasure or action . identify the tasks involved and the timing options for implementation.
