Cooperative Intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) is an emerging platform that can be applied to motor vehicles and roadside infrastructure to enable direct two-way communication between them. Because C-ITS enables connectivity between road users through wireless communication, it can provide real-time information about the road environment with an increased time horizon and awareness distance that is beyond both what in-vehicle technologies (such as radars and cameras) and the driver can visualise.

Australia needs to be prepared for the advent of C-ITS equipped vehicles. This Strategic Plan identifies a series of tasks to be undertaken across the six areas of policy requirements, international and national engagement, technical requirements, platform deployment requirements, trials and demonstrations, and marketing and communications. The successful delivery of C-ITS would largely depend on the level to which Australia engages and contributes to the international agenda, the extent of specialist expertise and resources brought to bear through effective leadership and management, and the extent and pace that effective communication strategies inform and encourage consumers to adopt this new technology.
