Split into two sections, a summary and detailed scientific report, this report details a study into the environmental impact of the use of alternative bituminous binders in sprayed sealing work. An important goal of the work was to gain an understanding of the potential environmental impacts of using Bitumen Emulsions and Foamed Bitumen as substitutes for hot or cutback bitumen in sprayed road surfacings. A shift to emulsion is complex and involves significant changes in energy use and secondary impacts due to cost differences in the different forms of binder. For these reasons the CSIRO was engaged to provide expert individual assessment.
