This report describes the perceived impact of heavy freight vehicles using major freight routes on people living or working close to such routes. The literature obtained, and the experience of relevant stakeholders, suggested that noise and emissions (dirt, dust and fumes) were the most widespread sources of annoyance associated with heavy freight traffic, and with traffic in general; that most people adapt to their circumstances without great annoyance or disruption of their enjoyment of their property; but that, where actual environmental noise exceeds certain thresholds, especially if this continues overnight, there is measurable impact on health as well as reported annoyance and loss of enjoyment. Based on these results a quantitative telephone survey was conducted of people living or working on or near major freight routes in all Australian States and Territories, and in New Zealand. Detailed results are presented in the report and summarised at the end.
