Updating Austroads pedestrian planning and design guidance in line with international good practice

Project Number: NTM6118

Start: 10-09-2018
End: 16-10-2020

This project will update Austroads Guide to Road Design, Guide to Traffic Management and Guide to Road Safety with up-to-date pedestrian planning and design information reflecting national and international good practice. It will provide road authorities with tools and training to achieve a consistent approach to walking provision, to reduce congestion, reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries, and achieve more liveable and walkable towns and cities. Austroads’ congestion and reliability research (AP-R534-16) recommended pedestrianised zones and more walking-focussed cities as strategies to reduce congestion. There are significant network operational benefits from improved pedestrian provision. Updated design guidance for pedestrians will help planners and engineers introduce safe, attractive street environments for walking, in line with international practice. The Austroads review of international practice developments, the Guide Information for Pedestrian Facilities, provides a starting point for updating Austroads guides.
