Guidelines and specifications for microsurfacing updated

Tuesday, 22 May 2018

Austroads has published updated guidelines and specifications for the use of microsurfacing treatments in Australia. Microsurfacing is presently the only type of bituminous slurry surfacing applied in Australia.

Guidelines and specifications for microsurfacing updated

The guidelines are based on a previous Austroads working document on microsurfacing that has gradually been updated based on practitioners’ experience gained over the last 25 years.

This report consists of two components:

  1. the guidance section presented in the main text aims to provide road asset owners or managers with information on the use of microsurfacing materials.
  2. the model specification primarily, presented separately in Appendix A, aims to provide a framework for national microsurfacing specification. The model could also be adopted for local use to promote consistency across their specifications.

Specification limits used in the model specification were determined based on typical values used in the International Slurry Surfacing Association guidelines. These limits have been modified as necessary for Australian conditions to achieve the desired field performance in various applications.

The document was produced by the Austroads Bituminous Surfacings Working Group.
