Geotechnical investigation and design guidance updated

Wednesday, 1 May 2019

Austroads has released an updated edition of Guide to Road Design Part 2: Design Considerations with a new extensive section on geotechnical investigation and design.

Guide to Road Design Part 2 provides a detailed description of design objectives, context-sensitive design, and factors that influence road design such as Safe System philosophy.

The new appendix describes the importance of geotechnical investigations and the way road design outcomes are influenced by site conditions, associated ground response, geological hazards and locally available material.

The content in the appendix replaces Guide to Road Design Part 7 which has been obsoleted. Updates to the appendix include:

  • expanded information on aims of a geotechnical investigation and design, desktop assessment, approvals for site investigations and design elements
  • new sections on safety during investigations and observational method.

References to Austroads Guides have been updated throughout.

The 2019 edition of Guide to Road Design Part 2 as written by David McTiernan, Ganesh Vengadasalem, Peter Ellis, Robert Grove and Peter Aumann. The update project was managed by Peter Ellis, Roads and Maritime Services NSW.

The PDF version of the Guide is available to download for free and the updates have been incorporated into the online version of the Guide.
