Austroads paves the way towards the national harmonisation of asphalt performance specifications

Wednesday, 16 August 2023

Austroads has released a technical report that lays out the first steps of what will become a new performance-based asphalt specification framework. The report, which is free to download on the Austroads website, is a significant step forward in standardising asphalt performance testing methodologies across Australia and New Zealand.

The asphalt industry is rapidly evolving, and it is widely accepted that prescriptive specifications are not necessarily well suited to take full advantage of the benefits that new and innovative technologies can provide. A national performance-based asphalt specification would allow asset owners and asphalt suppliers to take full advantage of the enhanced performance characteristics of current and emerging asphalt technologies.

“The new report marks a significant milestone for the road industry in Australia and New Zealand,” said Austroads Transport Infrastructure Program Manager, Ross Guppy. “We believe the report will encourage positive change in the way asphalt is tested and pave the way for more consistent, high-quality road infrastructure in Australia and New Zealand.”

The report contains information that will help practitioners introduce innovative materials and technologies, make use of locally-sourced recycled materials, gain a better understanding of the performance risks associated with different asphalt mixes, and link asphalt mix designs with pavement designs.

“The report will aid practitioners wanting to use better performing asphalt with less of a negative impact on the environment,” said Ross. “A nationally accepted specification framework will encourage innovation in the industry.”
