Austroads has updated the Guide to Road Design Part 6: Roadside Design, Safety and Barriers (AGRD Part 6) introducing new sections on the fundamentals of safety barrier systems and design advice for other road safety devices.
This webinar will focus on the updated Section 6 providing an overview of the process to design the installation of a safety barrier.
The session will describe the actions for defining the context of the installation including choosing an appropriate containment level. It will also outline the preliminary design tasks of selecting a barrier and defining its lateral and longitudinal position.
The aspects of detailed design will also be described, including the installation refinements, selecting the appropriate terminal or transition and the structural design of a proposed barrier. Finally, the webinar will briefly describe the documentation of the design.
The webinar will be presented by Dr Rod Troutbeck and Richard Fanning.
There will be question and answer opportunities during the session.
Dr Rod Troutbeck is a principal of Troutbeck & Associates. Dr Troutbeck has been a researcher at the Australian Road Research Board and a Professor of Civil Engineering at Queensland University of Technology before consulting. In 2000, Rod received an Australian Sports Medal for services to Motor Sport. He has also been awarded the Institution of Engineers Australia Transport Medal in 2008, the US Transportation Research Board Kenneth A. Stonex Roadside Safety Award in 2013, Emeritus Member status of the US Transportation Research Board committee for Roadside Safety Design in 2014 after being a member for over 20 years and co-chairman of the International Research sub-committee for 12 years. Rod has a number of publications on roadside safety dating from the early 1980s.
Richard Fanning is Principal Engineer Road Design and Traffic in the Engineering Division of Department of Transport, Victoria. Richard has extensive experience in the delivery of major projects and leadership roles across design teams during his 36-year career with the Department. He has represented the Department on the Austroads Road Design Task Force for over 10 years and has been involved in numerous Austroads projects and updates to the Guide to Road Design.
