This webinar will give an overview of an Austroads project which provided expert technical input into the update of four Australian standards which were revised by the Standards Australia Technical Committee CH-025 ‘Bitumen and related products for roadmaking’.

In Australia and New Zealand, bituminous binders and cutters used in road construction are tested prior to use to ensure they will perform satisfactorily during road construction and maintenance. There are a number of Australian standards which describe the test methods used to meet jurisdiction specification requirements, but many of these documents have not been updated for more than 20 years. The use of outdated test methods can make them difficult to adhere to. Some Australian jurisdictions have needed to develop in-house test methods, rather than use national Standards Australia methods, in order to overcome the shortcomings in the outdated methods.

This webinar will describe the main changes that have occurred during revision of the following standards:

  • AS 2341.3 Determination of kinematic viscosity
  • AS 2341.12 Determination of penetration
  • AS 2341.18 Determination of softening point
  • AS 3568 Oils for reducing the viscosity of bituminous binders for pavements.

You will learn about:

  • the process used to update an Australian standard
  • the main changes to each of the four standards
  • future revision work to be conducted by the CH-025 committee.

Presented by Robert Urquhart.

Robert Urquhart is a Principal Technology Leader in the Future Transport Infrastructure Group at ARRB. After obtaining his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Melbourne, he worked in Bitumen Products Technologist and Bitumen Technical Manager roles at BP Bitumen Australia between 1997 and 2010. During these roles he was responsible for developing and improving BP Bitumen’s range of bitumen, bituminous emulsion and polymer modified bitumen products. Since 2010, Robert has been conducting research and contract work at ARRB into the properties of bituminous binders and their performance in sprayed seals and asphalt. Over the past 10 years he has contributed to the revision of eight Austroads test methods and 12 Australian Standards relating to bituminous product testing.
