This webinar will provide an overview of an Austroads project that analysed telematics data to explore how heavy vehicles use roads designated as Key Freight Routes.
The project found that telematics can provide a wide range of statistics that can help inform public policy and road planning. Data collection using telematics devices installed in vehicles for commercial and regulatory purposes is less burdensome on drivers and transport operators than paper-based surveys and can provide complementary and, in some cases, more detailed road usage information than traditional traffic surveys.
While the National Telematics Framework (NTF) enables the collection of standardised data from a large sample of heavy vehicles and transport operators, obtaining data from a wider sample of vehicles with telematics devices installed would enable production of more reliable road usage estimates.
The report recommends developing a broader national freight vehicle telematics data collection which can be used at national, state, territory and local levels to inform policy and planning.
You’ll learn about:
- the methodology used in preparing the research
- outcomes of discussions with industry and other stakeholders
- key recommendations from the report
- recent updates to the NTF which support the recommendations including:
- new telematics applications at different levels of assurance
- release of the Telematics Data Exchange
- accessibility of data to road managers and other stakeholders.
