Asset management is defined by ISO 55000 (2014) as ‘the coordinated activity of an organisation to realise value from assets’, where the definition and measure of value can vary significantly depending on the service required.

There are many documents, such as the International Infrastructure Management Manual (IIMM, 2015), available to assist asset owners and managers in the management of their assets. However, much of the information in these documents is often generic and not always easily applied to a specific asset, such as bridges.

Therefore, the Engineering Guideline to Bridge Asset Management was developed to build on those foundational documents to provide specific asset management guidance for road bridges. The guideline promotes an engineering approach (engineering principles, knowledge, experience and modelling tools) as being the only robust method for understanding the current and future, condition and needs of a bridge network.

Based on the principles of ISO55000 and the IIMM, the guideline defines best practice asset management for bridges over their lifecycle in a manner that will provide a transparent link between investment and outcomes. It includes a specific and detailed asset management framework for bridges. The guideline covers the core elements of that framework with bridge specific examples underpinned by risk management protocols in keeping with ISO 31000.

This webinar will take participants through the development of the guideline and provide an overview of the key principles and learnings contained in the guideline.

There will be opportunities for questions and answers at the end of the session.

Presented by Barry Wright, Torill Pape and Peter Shaw.

Barry Wright has over 40 years of experience in bridge engineering, asset management and design management. This has included significant periods in both the public sector for the New Zealand Government Highways Agency and also in consultancy roles in New Zealand and overseas. Barry is the Austroads Project Manager for the guideline.

Dr Torill Pape is the Director (Structures Design, Review and Standards) at the Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland.

Dr Pape has over 20 years of experience as a civil/structural/bridge engineer across a broad number of sectors, including consulting, construction, public service and academia. She has experience in all aspects of the bridge life-cycle, including planning, design, construction, inspections, strengthening and rehabilitation, and de-commissioning.

Torill is active in several engineering and technical committees, is involved in the critical review of technical papers, standards guidelines and specifications, has several articles published in national and international scientific journals, and regularly presents at conferences, seminars, training courses and workshops.

Prior to her appointment to the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, she was a Technical Director and Team Lead (Bridges & Structures) with AECOM who won the contract to develop the guide.

Torill is the project manager and a lead author in the development of this guideline.

Peter Shaw is currently a Director at FMA Engineering Services. He has over 40 years of experience, including 27 years in Brisbane City Council involved in all aspects of the management of the Council’s structural assets. Since moving to private practice, Peter has been working closely with Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads to better understand their structural assets and improve the management of them. He firmly believes in the role of engineers in the management of bridges and supports the increased emphasis on good engineering in the guideline.
