The webinar will inform practitioners about the changes made to Part 2 of the Guide to Road Tunnels and the reasons for those changes. Every section of Part 2 will be addressed to show what changes have been made. More detail will be provided about the new sections of the document, highlighting the most significant material added to the document in the section on Systems Engineering.
Other significant issues addressed in the revised document and included in the webinar discussion:
- designing for autonomous vehicles
- designing for vehicles using alternative fuels
- designing for security and safety
- sustainability
- energy efficiency
- LED lighting systems
- emergency egress signage
- human factors considerations
- new ventilation assessment criteria
- standardised collection of incident and crash data.
The overall changes brought about by recent research and developments, and those caused by revisions of the other parts of the guide as well as the addition of Part 4 will also be addressed.

Les Louis is an independent consultant with over 50 years’ experience in road engineering and management. His career included over 33 years in the Department of Main Roads (or its successors), more than three years as the National Director of Highways for Hyder Consulting in Australia and over twenty years as an independent consultant. His experience covers all aspects of road engineering with an emphasis on planning and design in recent years. He has a strong management record, occupying senior management positions in Main Roads (25 years) and Hyder Consulting.
Lauren Thompson is a Senior Systems Engineer with 5 years of experience, working on Major Rail Projects including Suburban Rail Loop (Victoria, Aus), City Rail Link (Auckland, NZ) and Inland Rail (Qld, Aus) and prior experience as a Risk Engineer in the Oil and Gas Industry. Through systems engineering and assurance, Lauren is assisting to increase the efficiency and safety of the major rail projects within Australia.
Dr Richard Yeo has over 30 years research and management experience in the roads sector. He is the Chief Operating Officer for the Australian Road Research Board with oversight of national research programs covering Future Transport Systems, Transport Safety, Future Transport Infrastructure, Sustainability and Resilience, Asset Management and Data Collection. Richard has held key roles with Austroads and VicRoads as well as in commercial private sector consulting. He is an Adjunct Professor (Practice) with Monash University and maintains close involvement with initiatives such as Industrial Transformation Hubs and other academic research. Richard is involved in several national and international standards committees covering topics of asset management and digital engineering.
