Austroads has released the Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management Part 9: Processes and Procedures, for industry consultation.

Austroads' Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management is being developed as part of the strategic priority project Safety at Road Worksites (Project BN2019). The intent of Austroads member authorities is establish the nationally preferred and harmonised approach for undertaking temporary traffic management for works on roads.

The CoPTTM will be an eleven-part series that steps traffic control professionals through all of the processes, procedures and technical information required to develop, write, implement and manage traffic management requirements for work sites. It has been developed based on best practice temporary traffic management practice in Australia and New Zealand, to assist road authorities to meet their existing legislative responsibilities for workplace and public safety.

Part 9 details the processes and procedures relating to jurisdictional management of temporary traffic management at roadworks. The information included covers:

  • categories of temporary traffic management
  • powers, roles and responsibilities
  • training
  • standard forms and descriptions.

It provides guidance to road authorities, road infrastructure managers, any party conducting works on or near a road, and all persons involved in planning, designing, implementing, managing and completing temporary traffic management works.

The industry comment period closes on Wednesday 17 July 2019.

Comments must be submitted using the document review template (Word doc). Please submit your comments on the WORD template and save your organisation name in the file name. Comments provided on any other format may not be considered.  Please do not provide PDF versions of the comment template.

The guides are intended to replace the relevant material currently contained in Australian Standard AS1742.3 and associated State and Territory documents. The material is also intended to reflect practices to be applied in New Zealand but due to differences in signage practices may require additional supporting documentation in New Zealand.

If you have any queries regarding this industry consultation, please email the Austroads Safety at Road Worksites Project Manager Dan Sullivan at austroads@solutionsintransport.com.au.

This draft has been released following extensive input from a Working Group comprising all Austroads Member Authorities and a range of industry stakeholders. Following the industry consultation phase, the guide is intended to be finalised and released later this year.
