The purpose of this literature review is to assess the current body of research for the incorporation of recycled material in pavements to inform updated guidance to the current Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology Part 4E: Recycled Materials.
New applications for recycled materials are continually finding broader applications within industry and it is important that these materials be scrutinised prior to implementation.
This literature review found that a protocol for assessment needs to be developed to provide administrative agencies with a framework to rigorously scrutinise emerging materials for potential impacts to economy, environment, society and performance.
The updated Guide will allow greater confidence in the uptake of recyclables by mitigating risk and uncertainty alongside provision of higher quality assets.
