This report presents the results of a laboratory study to investigate development of a new durability test method that is acceptable for use in Australia. The study aimed to develop a more robust long-term ageing test method and resolve the issues associated with the current Australian durability test method which include equipment sustainability and testing time duration.

Research into the development of a new durability test included the use of two new devices (the Pressure Ageing Vessel (PAV) and the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR)). The PAV was found to be an ideal alternative device to the ageing oven used in the current durability test method. It appears the DSR is a suitable replacement for the Shell sliding plate micro-viscometer used in the current durability test. During this study an Australian PAV ageing protocol was developed for bitumen binders. Preliminary experiments were also conducted to investigate the visco-elastic property changes that occurred when PMB binders were subjected to the Australian PAV ageing protocol.
