A New Reference Aggregate for PAFV Testing

This report describes studies of the effects of test conditions on vertical polished aggregate friction value (PAFV) results and the results of a proficiency study which was conducted to determine a preliminary PAFV value for UK aggregate. The repeatability limit of vertical PAFV results, for samples of Panmure and UK aggregates that were polished in separate polishing runs, was about 3 friction units. Unpolished specimens of these materials showed a repeatability limit of between 5 and 6 friction units. Vertical PAFV results were found to be unaffected by the relationship between the direction that aggregates were polished during the test, and the direction that their friction properties were measured. Friction value results obtained for unpolished aggregates were also unaffected by the direction in which their friction properties were measured. The results obtained in the proficiency study yielded a preliminary friction value of 45 for polished UK aggregate in the vertical and horizontal PAFV tests.
