This report is the fourth in a series which examines the properties of bitumens used in Australia. The bitumen testing program was undertaken to develop a database of selected bitumen samples dating back to 1956. This database has been used to identify possible trends in properties associated with recent changes in the manufacture of bitumens used in Australia. There has been an increase in the quantity of bitumen imported and new crude oil sources are being used. These imported bitumens may perform differently to the ‘traditional’ local bitumens which were historically manufactured using predominantly Middle Eastern crude oils, and on which current Australian sprayed sealing practice is based. The database may assist in investigating any future problems as they arise.
