All road and traffic authorities need to direct their funding wisely to road safety treatments that ensure the most cost-effective returns in crash and injury reductions. In order to do this, accurate information is required on the expected benefits of safety treatments in terms of casualty reduction, as well as the costs of treatments and how long they are expected to provide benefits. There has been much research to determine the safety benefits of treatments, but little on the expected life of these treatments and how much they cost to install. Treatment life in the context of this report refers to the length of time that the treatment is expected to remain in place, and be of a sufficient standard to continue providing a safety benefit. It is recognised that some treatments will be removed or reduce in effectiveness even though they are still functioning, due to changes in road use or for other reasons outlined in this report. It is also recognised that many assets will require some maintenance so that they perform at the required standard, and that there is a cost associated with this. Current advice on treatment life differs across jurisdictions. For example, in one jurisdiction a treatment life of 10 years may be used for a roundabout, while in others, a figure of 20 years may be used. In some cases there are good reasons for differences in treatment life (particularly due to climate or traffic), while in other cases there appears to be no explanation, and this most likely indicates a lack of accurate information on this issue.
