Little data is available to allow trends in bitumen properties to be determined or to compare the properties of bitumens used in different jurisdictions. Such information will become important as more imported, non-traditional bitumens are used in Australia. Twenty bitumens from Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales were subjected to a range of test procedures. These included viscosity measurement at a range of temperatures, durability testing, chemical composition, determination of softening point and penetration and the calculation of various derived parameters. Generally all bitumens complied with specifications. TSP was found to be a good indicator of temperature susceptibility of viscosity. A small number of bitumens had properties close to levels which have been associated with field distress.
