This report presented a summary of three pilot studies completed on bitumen emulsions, foam bitumen sprayed sealing and warm mix asphalt.Increasing awareness of environmental issues and energy conservation have led to identifying alternative binder delivery systems to replace or supplement the existing hot delivery methods used in Australia and New Zealand. These three pilot studies have shown that these materials not only perform well on the road but also satisfy the criteria of being more environmentally friendly, improve occupational health and safety for workers, and are more energy efficient. However, the major challenges faced by the introduction of these materials are the high costs incurred and a resistance to change from current practices which provide acceptable performance.
