This summary report describes a measurement technology with the capacity to provide estimates of the vehicle pavement interaction through measurements of the horizontal stresses resulting from vehicle movements. A transducer specifically designed to measure shear forces was developed as part of this project. Results of a site trial are discussed in the report. Information is also presented on a laboratory test for assessing the sensitivity of open grade asphalt to the damaging effects of horizontal stresses resulting from vehicle movements. Future research directions are also discussed.
