In 1993, Austroads performed an extensive trial of foamed bitumen sprayed sealing in Australia, as a part of environmental and energy effective sealing technology development program. The trials were conducted in various states and reported to be successful in producing satisfactory performing pavements. However, the technology is currently not used in Australia (or France) due to several operational problems encountered, and commercial viability issues. A recently introduced spraying system (synchronised sprayer) may be able to resolve some of the operational problems previously encountered. The report therefore proposed specific procedures to revive the technique, if required (e.g. due to environmental concerns).
