Overseas bitumens are now being imported into Australia and the properties of possible future imports were evaluated. Overseas bitumens from various sources were obtained and subjected to a range of chemical and physical tests. These included dynamic shear rheometer measurements, and a shear susceptibility parameter was developed using this data. The overseas bitumens had a wider range of chemical and physical properties than Australian bitumens. Some had temperature susceptibility and asphaltene values associated with surfacing distress in Australia. Most overseas bitumens were manufactured to specifications aimed at controlling asphalt not sprayed seal performance.
