This report describes a measurement technology with the capacity to provide estimates of the vehicle-pavement interaction through measurements of the horizontal stresses resulting from vehicle movements. A summary of overseas technology leading to the development of the equipment is presented along with solutions specific to the range of surface conditions and vehicle tyre geometries identified. A transducer specifically designed to measure shear forces was developed as part of this project. Results of a site trial are also discussed in the report.
