The document provides a guide to the use of bituminous materials in road-making applications. Bituminous materials include bitumen obtained from the refining of crude oil and products derived from bitumen through additional manufacturing processes or use of additives. Reference is also made to other sources of bituminous material and non-bituminous binders. This document provides an introduction to bituminous binder technology and a guide to selection of a bituminous binder type for a particular application as well as covering some of the properties and composition of bituminous materials. The principal tests used for the assessment of bituminous materials are also covered. This document is part of a number of publications forming the basis of the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology.
