Electronic toll collection (ETC) is at an early stage of development, here and internationally. Road users and governments are keen to develop ETC systems that are compatible and interoperable and permit free flow, so that a user can use one tag device to pay tolls on all toll roads. This study has recommended (with the subsequent adoption by the Australian Transport Council) the utilisation of the European draft CEN standard and its associated operating frequency of 5.8 GHz for all future government-sponsored electronic tolling installations.
