This report has reviewed ITS literature and information provided by industry to identify and establish the potential of candidate technologies to reduce undesirable interaction between freight vehicles and other traffic on metropolitan networks. The report found that ITS technologies beneficial for road agency applications included improved signal operations (timing and coordination) for freight vehicles, driver information systems, variable message signs, variable speed limit signs, heavy vehicle speed awareness systems, access management and electronic tolling (for privately funded roads). The candidate technologies identified fall into three areas - signal operations, driver information systems and truck tracking. The three areas are also interrelated because travel information is derived from detectors on the road as well as vehicle tracking, and improved signal operations depends upon similar information from roadside detectors as well as vehicle tracking.
