Freight vehicles are becoming more productive in order to meet these demands. All of these changes have impacts on the amount of travel and the loads carried by trucks on roads. This in turn leads to a range of environmental, safety, cost and amenity outcomes. Depending on local circumstances these outcomes can be positive or negative. These guidelines were developed by consultants reporting to the Austroads Freight Program and a state agency reference group. Extensive consultation was undertaken with local government, state agencies and the freight industry across Australasia to identify the strengths and weaknesses of current practices, and user expectations of the Guidelines.
