This paper outlines the design of the replacement of the English Street Bridge over Tullamarine Freeway.

The bridge is a single span, Trough Girder Bridge with a span of 35.5m between abutments. Due to constraints of the brownfield site, including an existing tram line, there were significant limitations on the depth of the superstructure, and the design was limited to a total depth of 1.0m. Further to this, the construction program only allowed for a 6 week construction program, from shutdown to re-opening of English street. During the detailed design, this was further reduced to 3 weeks.

The short timeframes presented significant challenges, both relating to constructability and structural detailing of the bridge structure.

This paper will explore the design details and processes followed, including the integral connection of the trough girder to the abutment, the accelerated construction program design details, proposed precast deck arrangement and the proposed precast abutment design.
