The new AS 5100.8 Rehabilitation and Strengthening sets out minimum requirements for the repair, extension of service life, strengthening, change of function (such as a road bridge to a pedestrian/cyclist bridge) and widening to existing bridge structures.

This is a completely new Part to the AS 5100 Design Standard series.

This paper summarises the content of the new Part 8 and addresses for existing bridges: condition assessment, methods of repair, rehabilitation and strengthening for concrete, steel and masonry structures plus specific requirements for bearings, deck joints, barriers and culverts.

For the first time in an Australian Bridge Design Standard, particular requirements are also provided for the design and assessment of timber elements to existing bridges, fibre reinforced polymer (including carbon fibre) strengthening and cathodic protection to existing structures.
