The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has owned and operated emergency Bailey Bridges for about 60 years. These bridges are available for emergency and semi-permanent use by public users (Central Government and Local Authority) and private users.

With the outsourcing of public roading services about 20 years ago, the Bailey bridge system management and operation was changed to become commercial and sustainable. NZTA manages two separate contracts, one each in the North and South Islands. These five year contracts include component storage and maintenance, design, component transportation and bridge erection/dismantling, inspection and repairs. Users of the Bailey Bridges pay for erection/dismantling, as well as hire charges.

Bailey Bridges have proven to be very effective in providing the flexibility and robustness required for rapid response bridging. The Bailey Bridge system will continue to be the primary emergency bridge type for the foreseeable future in New Zealand.
