For the design of concrete box girder bridges, many bridge design engineers adopt the shear and torsion design rules of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification. However, with each new Edition of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, the design rules have been modified. This paper investigates the background to the various shear and torsion design rules of recent editions of the AASHTO LRFD Code. Comparisons are made between the various design methods in the AASHTO LRFD Code, AS 3600, AS 5100 and a limited number of published test results. Further, the shear design rules for composite members consisting of prestressed precast girders and insitu concrete deck slab are investigated.
