An existing model predicted binder life by combining a binder hardening (increase in viscosity) model and a distress viscosity model. Inputs for the two models were site temperature parameters, binder durability (resistance to hardening) and seal size. The distress viscosity model was updated using new data from Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland. The new model was used to determine reseal intervention point for seals in different climatic regions in Australia. Reduction in bitumen durability from 10 days to 5 days resulted in a 27% decrease in estimated binder life.
