Unsignalised and signalised intersection guidance updated

Wednesday, 7 June 2017

Austroads has published an updated edition of the Guide to Road Design Part 4A: Unsignalised and Signalised Intersections.

Unsignalised and signalised intersection guidance updated

The Guide provides road designers and other practitioners with guidance on the detailed geometric design of all at‑grade intersections (excluding roundabouts).

It includes information about intersection sight distances, including approach sight distance, safe intersection sight distance, and minimum gap sight distance. Left and right turn treatments are outlined including the incorporation of auxiliary lanes at intersections and the use and size of traffic islands.

Updates have been made throughout this third edition to include new and updated reference material and cross‑references to other Guides. Most figures have been redrawn to provide a consistent appearance. The major updates include:

  • updates to road safety, including the Safe System principles
  • additional information relating to safe intersection sight distance and additional description in tables to assist in interpretation
  • additional information on auxiliary lanes including turning radii, vehicle speeds, and acceleration lane lengths

This edition was written by Peter Aumann, ARRB and Mike Whitehead, Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The hard copy can be purchased for $77 (+postage and handling) and the PDF for $61.60.

Austroads members can download PDF versions of the Guides for free. This includes all state and territory road agencies and local councils in Australia and New Zealand.
