Selecting and designing raised safety platforms

Friday, 27 November 2020

Austroads has published a report clarifying the design and performance of raised safety platforms based on leading Australasian and international practice.

Raised safety platforms are increasingly used to reduce a vehicle’s maximum comfortable operating speed to a Safe System collision speed.

The vertical deflection devices are primarily used at intersections in low speed environments.

But Richard Delplace, Program Manager Transport Network Operations, said this research focussed on their application in innovative contexts, including urban arterial intersections with speed limits above 50 km/h.

“Our research investigated the use of raised safety platforms at five higher speed signalised intersections (two involving multiple intersections) and six locations of secondary interest in urban and rural settings to ensure our updated guidance is built on real-life experience,” Richard said.

“Both Guide to Traffic Management and Guide to Road Design will be updated to reflect this new guidance.”

The report can be downloaded from Austroads’ website at no charge.
