New process for selecting on-road public transport priority treatments

Friday, 4 December 2020

Austroads has released a research report which presents a practical process to guide practitioners through the selection of treatments that prioritise public transport on roads.

This step-by-step process can be used to assess options on existing or new roads. It considers all forms of priority treatments, ranging from road space, stop design and location, traffic signal priority, and traffic signal gating.

On-road public transport is an efficient way of moving people between their homes, employment, recreation and services, with less road space required per passenger than private car use.

Austroads Program Manager Transport Network Operations, Richard Deplace, said consequently practitioners in many Australian and New Zealand cities are implementing road space and signalling techniques and technologies to improve the travel time, reliability, frequency and comfort for on-road public transport users.

“The on-road public transport priority treatment tool will help traffic managers and planners to prioritise public transport, maximising accessibility and reliability, rather relying on increasing road capacity.”

“Using this guidance, practitioners will improve the consistency, traceability and robustness of their decision making process,” Richard said.

The development of the tool builds on research completed in 2017 which evaluated prioritisation treatments.
