Improved guidance on interrupted traffic flow theory

Friday, 9 October 2020

Austroads has published a report that proposes improvements to the technical guidance on interrupted traffic flow theory in Part 2 and Part 3 of the Guide to Traffic Management.

The primary purpose of the project was to update guidance on existing topics and emerging best Australasian practice relating to interrupted traffic flow.

Report co-author, Mark Plattz, says that the updates will broaden practitioners’ understanding of interrupted traffic flow theory.

“A solid understanding of key fundamentals is required to enable practitioners to optimise the use of their existing road network and effectively manage traffic congestion,” Mark said.

The report includes three practical case studies and updated guidance on:

  • bottlenecks
  • travel time reliability
  • roundabout flow theory
  • signalised intersection analysis
  • active transportation and demand management
  • multi-modal considerations
  • traffic flow impacts of heavy vehicles.

The report detailing the project methodology and the updates to the Guide to Traffic Management can be downloaded from Austroads’ website at no charge.
