Austroads has published a new edition of Guide to Road Tunnels Part 2: Planning, Design and Commissioning.
Road tunnels are major pieces of infrastructure that form crucial parts of the road network. Australian and New Zealand transport agencies currently manage more than 100 kilometres of paved road tunnels.
Ross Guppy, Austroads Transport Infrastructure Program Manager said the Guide includes all aspects of planning, design and commissioning of road tunnels.
“The Guide is broad in its coverage and includes structural and geotechnical requirements, fire and life safety, ventilation, lighting, traffic and plant monitoring and control, electrical power supply and the requirements for associated buildings,” Ross said.
The new edition includes a systems engineering framework for the delivery of new tunnels. Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach governing the total technical and managerial effort required to transform stakeholder needs, expectations, and constraints into a solution and to support that solution throughout its life.
The Guide also now includes a standardised approach to collect incident and crash data in and around tunnels. This will help to ensure the data is consistent and comparable with other crash data collected and analysed by road agencies.
The new edition includes updated information related to emergency egress signage, designing for vehicles using alternative fuels. designing for security and safety, sustainability, energy efficiency, LED lighting systems, human factors considerations, and ventilation assessment criteria.
“The recommended designs for emergency egress signage can be seen in Sydney’s WestConnex New M5 tunnel opened last year and have been incorporated into Melbourne’s West Gate Tunnel Project which is currently under construction,” Ross said.
The Guide is designed to be used by engineers and technical specialists in tunnel technology, proponents of road tunnel solutions, senior decision makers, and regulators associated with the construction of tunnels.
